What it means to have an accessible website

Accessibility on websites is something that is often overlooked today which is not only a display of poor planning, but it has the potential to alienate a percentage of your audience who might otherwise find useful information on your website.

In order to standardize and bring consistency to websites all across the web, there are two organizations or two standards that have emerged as authoritative as it relates to accessibility for people with disabilities. The first is The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines or WCAG which was developed by the World Wide Web Consortium. These are technical standards that help make the digital world more accessible to people with disabilities. Their website is at WCAG and in their words is “The central source for information and resources on digital accessibility and WCAG conformance”.

The second thing that happened was in 1998 when Congress amended the rehabilitation act of 1973 to require federal agencies to make information accessible to people with disabilities. Details of this legislation can be found on Section 508 of the GSA website.
